Should I get my teeth sealed while I’m wearing braces?

You may be familiar with having the chewing surfaces of your large, permanent molars sealed. Your family dentist does this. The goal is to prevent bacteria from settling in the deep grooves of your molars and causing cavities there.

Before you get fixed braces, your orthodontist will offer to seal the tooth surfaces where the brackets will be bonded as well. This makes sense because the brackets create small crevices that, just like the deep grooves in your molars, are difficult to clean.

The sealant provides extra protection, but it doesn’t replace brushing your teeth! 😀
