Every quarter (every 3 months), we bill for the services we have provided to our patients. Both patients with public health insurance and those with private health insurance then receive a bill. Patients with public health insurance receive a bill for the copayment required by law, and patients with private health insurance receive their private billing statement. <\/p>\n

At our practice, we typically begin treating children no earlier than age 6 or 7. For our young patients, mental maturity and a willingness to cooperate are crucial. In general, children should see an orthodontist at least once by the time they turn 10. Our oldest patients are in their mid-80s. There are \u201cno limits\u201d when it comes to age, as long as you still have your own teeth. =)

There are different types of braces: fixed and removable. Treatment using aligners<\/strong> differs from conventional braces. See the “Aligner” entry in the glossary for more information. For children, myofunctional therapy<\/strong> is an option. This approach uses removable appliances to influence the function of the tongue, cheeks, lips, etc., so that jaw growth and tooth eruption can proceed as smoothly as possible. However, this method also requires the use of \u201cappliances.\u201d Parents who ideally want to avoid braces for their children should ensure that their children breathe through their noses<\/strong> and have\u2014or develop\u2014 well-developed chewing and facial muscles<\/strong>, for example, by chewing healthy, solid foods. <\/p>\n

The coverage provided by statutory health insurance plans is limited compared to what modern orthodontics has to offer.
If you wish to tailor your treatment independently of the requirements of statutory health insurance plans, your orthodontist will bill you privately for all treatment methods that are not covered by statutory health insurance.
These are referred to as \u201cnon-contractual services,\u201d or AVL for short.<\/p>\n

In principle, however, treatment that \u201conly\u201d straightens the teeth<\/strong> is completed more quickly <\/strong> than<\/strong> treatment that involves changing<\/strong> the position of the jaws<\/strong>. This is the case, for example, if your lower jaw is too far \u201cback\u201d or too far \u201cforward.\u201d The more you cooperate<\/strong>\u2014that is, the more you<\/strong> follow your orthodontist\u2019s instructions\u2014 the<\/strong> smoother and faster<\/strong> the treatment generally proceeds. <\/p>\n

[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”Teeth Whitening” _builder_version=”4.23.1″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”#ffffff” background_enable_color=”on” global_colors_info=”{}” open=”off”]<\/p>\n

Teeth whitening is a \u201cbleaching procedure\u201d for which the patient must be at least 18 years old<\/strong>. Teeth whitening is intended to remove discoloration that cannot be eliminated by professional teeth cleaning alone.
These \u201cstains\u201d can be caused by, for example, coffee, tea, and tobacco use, medications, or the natural color of the teeth. Crowns, bridges, and fillings cannot be \u201cbleached<\/strong>.\u201d
There are several teeth whitening methods. Here\u2019s a brief overview of the two most common ones: <\/p>\n

In-Office Teeth Whitening:<\/strong>
The entire teeth whitening procedure takes place right here in<\/strong> our office<\/strong>.
First, the teeth are cleaned, and we make sure there is no tooth decay or other contraindications for undergoing teeth whitening.
Next, a gum shield is applied, and the teeth are coated with the bleaching gel. The gel is then activated using a UV lamp. Once the application time has elapsed, the used bleaching gel is removed and new gel is applied. The process is usually repeated 2\u20133 times. In total, the procedure takes about 60 minutes<\/strong>.
After \u201cin-office bleaching,\u201d you should, if possible, consume only foods and liquids that contain little to no coloring agents for 2 days, such as water, milk, rice, potatoes, quark, etc.
Your teeth may be sensitive after the whitening treatment. This side effect usually subsides after 1\u20132 days.

At-Home Teeth Whitening:<\/strong>
With this method, you perform the whitening yourself at home<\/strong>.
First, your teeth are cleaned, and we ensure that there is no tooth decay or other contraindications for undergoing whitening.
Based on your dental impressions, we fabricate thin, custom trays<\/strong>. These trays resemble so-called \u201cnight guards\u201d and have small \u201cpockets\u201d into which you apply the bleaching gel yourself.
We will provide you with the trays, the bleaching gel, and the necessary instructions.

Orthodontists refer to the wire that connects all the brackets in a fixed braces system as the archwire. It is replaced regularly. This is called an archwire change. <\/p>\n

Brackets are \u201cstickers\u201d that the orthodontist attaches to the teeth. It works similarly to a train:
The teeth are the passengers, the brackets are the train cars, and the wire on which the train cars\u2014or brackets\u2014sit is the track.
Just as there are different types of train cars, there are also different types of brackets. Some are made of metal and others of ceramic. However, the purpose of the brackets always remains the same: <\/p>\n

To move the passengers\u2014that is, the teeth.<\/p>\n

Some removable braces can be customized with colorful designs, depending on the patient’s preference. These braces include “plates” and “functional regulators.” <\/p>\n

Plates:<\/strong>
Plastic braces in various colors for one jaw. They are designed, for example, to widen the jaw or move groups of teeth in a specific direction. <\/p>\n

Functional appliances:<\/strong>
Plastic clasps in various colors that connect the upper jaw to the lower jaw. Commonly referred to as “double-decker” or “monoblock.” They are designed to alter the position of the upper jaw relative to the lower jaw and\/or the function of the tongue, lips, etc. <\/p>\n

In cases where the position of the upper jaw relative to the lower jaw deviates so significantly from the norm that surgery (dysgnathia surgery) would be necessary, camouflage therapy is often an option. This means avoiding surgery and correcting the misalignment of the jaws by positioning the teeth in an \u201cunnatural\u201d way. This often requires the extraction of permanent teeth. <\/p>\n

An overbite is characterized by a deep bite combined with a specific position of the upper front teeth. A deep bite means that the upper incisors almost or completely cover the lower ones. The upper incisors are also tilted significantly backward. If you have a deep bite, it is usually inherited and therefore tends to run in the family. <\/p>\n

We mainly use Damon brackets in our practices. Damon brackets are self-ligating brackets, which means that the wire\/archwire is held in place by a sliding latch mechanism inside the bracket rather than by an elastic band. Damon brackets cause less friction (loss of force) than conventional (non-self-ligating) brackets. They are also very small, which makes it easier to clean between the brackets. <\/p>\n

As a general rule: if something comes loose or breaks, please let your orthodontist know as soon as possible. He or she will then schedule an emergency appointment with you to fix the problem.
If the archwire is loose or causing pain, you have two options. <\/p>\n

Either come see us at our office and we’ll reattach the wire, or go to the emergency dental clinic. They’ll simply cut off the loose wire with a pair of side cutters. <\/p>\n

[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”Clear Braces” _builder_version=”4.24.0″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”#ffffff” background_enable_color=”on” global_colors_info=”{}” open=”off”]<\/p>\n

In addition to treatment with conventional removable braces and brackets, a method has become established that uses so-called \u201caligners\u201d or, in German, \u201cschienen.\u201d In this treatment, the teeth are moved step by step using several thin plastic aligners that fit over the teeth.
The information on where and how the teeth should move is encoded in the different shapes of these aligners, much like a sand mold from a sandbox. Depending on the misalignment of the teeth, a varying number of aligners are needed, and tooth-colored plastic attachments are bonded to the teeth (retention elements for the aligner) to correct the tooth position. The aligners must be worn 22 hours a day, except while eating and brushing your teeth. Since the aligners are transparent, this treatment is virtually invisible. <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”Dysgnathia” _builder_version=”4.23.1″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”#ffffff” background_enable_color=”on” global_colors_info=”{}” open=”off”]<\/p>\n

Dysgnathia refers to a malocclusion of the teeth and\/or jaws.<\/p>\n

[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”Dysgnathia Surgery” _builder_version=”4.23.1″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”#ffffff” background_enable_color=”on” global_colors_info=”{}” open=”off”]<\/p>\n

In dysgnathia surgery, the position and\/or shape of the upper and\/or lower jaw is altered. To do this, the surgeon may, for example, need to detach the upper jaw from the skull or “fracture” the lower jaw in order to then reattach the jaws in a new position. <\/p>\n

Medical-grade stainless steel is rust-resistant and durable. For this reason, it is widely used in orthodontics, including for braces. We prefer stainless steel brackets over ceramic brackets because of the excellent properties of stainless steel. Ceramic brackets can break (think of a porcelain plate) and cannot be reattached if they come loose. Furthermore, they create an unattractive contrast with the tooth if it becomes discolored due to food stains (color pigments) (white-yellow contrast). If you still prefer ceramic brackets, you are, of course, welcome to have them. Otherwise, we prefer to use stainless steel brackets. <\/p>\n

[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”Copay for Braces” _builder_version=”4.23.1″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” open=”off”]<\/p>\n

Patients with public health insurance receive a bill<\/strong> every quarter (i.e., every 3 months<\/strong>), as required by law. This is part of a \u201cincentive program\u201d run by the public health insurance providers<\/strong>. Of the portion reimbursed by the public health insurance providers, they initially pay only 80%. The orthodontist must \u201ccollect\u201d the remaining 20%<\/strong> from the patient on behalf of the health insurance companies. This saves the health insurance companies costs and effort and \u201cpleases\u201d the orthodontists. If you have two children undergoing orthodontic treatment, your out-of-pocket share is reduced to 10%<\/strong> instead of 20%. If the patient has cooperated well during treatment and the goal has been achieved, you will be reimbursed for your out-of-pocket share by the statutory health insurance companies. Of course, it goes without saying that this only happens once you send the completion certificate (issued by your orthodontist), along with a request stating \u201cI would like my money back,\u201d to your health insurance provider. Otherwise, you\u2019ve essentially made a charitable donation to your health insurance provider. <\/p>\n

[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”Fitting the Braces” _builder_version=”4.23.1″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” open=”off”]<\/p>\n

Getting braces isn’t painful. Of course, the feeling of wearing braces is new and therefore unfamiliar, but it usually only takes a week to get used to them. So hang in there! Once the braces are fitted, they begin to work, and this can cause some pressure-related pain in your teeth during the first 2 days after fitting. <\/p>\n

[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”Brushing with an Electric Toothbrush & Braces” _builder_version=”4.23.1″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” open=”off”]<\/p>\n

An electric toothbrush can make brushing your teeth easier. However, if you have fixed braces, it does not replace the need for additional cleaning with interdental brushes! <\/p>\n

[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”Removing Braces” _builder_version=”4.23.1″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” open=”off”]<\/p>\n

Removing braces is quick and easy. Sometimes it feels a little tight, but it usually doesn’t hurt. The brace is attached to the tooth with plastic adhesive. So it doesn’t stick directly to the tooth; instead, there is a layer of plastic adhesive between the brace and the tooth. The orthodontist first uses pliers to pry the bracket off the composite. The bracket is now off, and all that remains on the tooth is the plastic. Of course, this also needs to be removed, so it\u2019s taken off the tooth using a special polisher. Afterward, the teeth are thoroughly cleaned, and they look like new. <\/p>\n

Orthodontic treatment is possible well into old age. Once the application time has elapsed, the used bleaching gel is removed and new gel is applied. The process is usually repeated 2\u20133 times. In total, the procedure takes about 60 minutes.
After \u201cin-office bleaching,\u201d you should, if possible, consume only foods and liquids that contain little to no coloring agents for 2 days, such as water, milk, rice, potatoes, quark, etc.
Your teeth may be sensitive after the whitening procedure. This side effect usually subsides after 1\u20132 days.
